Jacques Derrida

"A text cannot belong to no genre, it cannot be without...a genre. Every test participates in one or several genres, there is no genreless text."

The post modern theory looks at intertextual references to relevant culture, bricolage seen meaning there is a variety of different materials used to portray any meaning. There is also an eclectic mix of old and new ideas and references, this could be taken seriously and used to conform to a genre convention or it could be used to create a parody of the original.

My video would use elements of Jacques Derrida's theory, mostly his ideas on genre, the video follows many genre conventions; such as showing the band performing while also featuring a narrative, in this narrative the colour palatte is very dulled which is commonly seen in alt-rock, as it is to express the feelings of someone who is fed up with their day-to-day life.

Laura Mulvey

"In film, the male gaze occurs when the audience is put ito the perspective of a heterosexual man. A scene may linger on the curves of a woman's body"

Feminists would argue that such instances are presented in the context closest relating to that of a male, hence it's referral to being the Male Gaze.

Alt-rock bands, especially ones that are made up of female musicians, rarely use "the Male Gaze" in their videos, they tend to have a less sexualised theme unless they are parodying sexuality. My video would not need to include anything like this as it does not fit with the lyrics or the narrative created for the video.

Vladimir Propp

Vladimir Propp used Russian folklore to establish the main narrative events and structure of a typical story and also established the character types commonly seen in typical stories.

These characters were:

The Hero- Leaves the safety of a well known location or situation in order to find something.

The Villain- Takes something from the hero and/or struggles against the hero.

The Donor- Gives something to the hero.

The Helper- Helps the hero, usually a magical helper.

The Princess- The prize for the hero.

The False Hero- appears as a good character but is relevealed to be bad.

The dispatcher- sends the hero on their journey.

The Hero in my video would likely be the girl seen in the narrative parts of the video, the build up to her final scene on the beach would make the audience sympathise with her. She is also seen leaving the safety of a routine day-to-day life, and doing something she would not normally do. However there would not be much place for any of the other character types seen in Propp's theory as the narrative of the video focuses on the girl alone.

The gravestones in the video could be interpretted as The Dispatcher, as the girl's realisation that life doesnt last forever comes about when she visits the graveyard, this event sends her on her "journey" to change.
